advanced
Open residential breaker panel with one breaker being removed
Inside the panel: breakers clip onto metal bars that carry power.
Safety first

Turn off the breaker and verify power is off before working. If you are not comfortable, hire a licensed electrician.

Step-by-step
1

Turn off the main breaker and remove the panel cover.

2

Verify the bus is de-energized where you will work; main lugs remain hot.

Touch a non-contact tester to the outlet or wires. No light or beep means the power is off.
3

Disconnect the load wire from the old breaker.

4

Snap the old breaker out and install the new breaker of the same type and rating.
